Vitor's diary: Swapping the pitch for the water

BBQ evening by lake after training

Our assistant coach Vitor Matos is using a diary to provide glimpses behind the scenes of our training camp in Saalfelden.

With his eighth diary entry, the Portuguese coach talks through the morning session and an excursion together to Zell am See.

Monday 15 July 2024

Dear FC Red Bull Salzburg fans,

Today we were back on the training pitch, the place where we all belong. That’s the safe place for me and Pep.

When we select a specific exercise for the training session, our main priority is to improve the style of play of the team. That happens from the first day of the season until the last. Developing the style of play of the team carries certain physiological demands. We have to be sure to manage those demands. The fitness of a player has a limit, but developing their understanding of the game doesn't…

For this reason, today we decided to create different stimuli for the players who played 60 minutes against Sparta Prague and for those who played 30 minutes. We decided to start the session with a passing drill with a third man that focuses on passing into space. After that, all the players did two 5v2 rondos lasting eight minutes. These were TOP!! In between we did a 1-2-3 game that demands that the player has the ball in the air and competes.

The ones who had only played 30 minutes kept going with the session. Of course we did games too - they need match practice, after all! We did a one-touch game, then two touches and no limits in the end. Play and compete. We finished the session with a shooting drill with a lot of variations.

We had our final team event in the afternoon, and we loved it! We went into the lake to do some water sports activity, which was absolutely brilliant. We then finished the day with a BBQ by the lake.

Today I read an article of a Portuguese comedian who said: “Never forget that football gives to millions probably the only chance they have to say: I won!” That is probably the reason why I love this game so much!

Des is Soizburg! That is our way!

Until tomorrow,
Vitor Matos
