Bayern Munich and our Red Bulls are clubs united by previous tussles in the UEFA Champions League as well our meeting on 6 January. Plus a few players who have represented both clubs in the recent past. Time to take a look back...
He may have played a grand total of two minutes for Bayern, but Louis Ngwat-Mahop makes that list, along with the legendary Alex Zickler. The 2000/01 UEFA Champions League winner celebrated seven German Bundesliga titles and lifted three domestic titles this side of the border. Stefan Maierhofer led the line for both clubs as part of a long CV for the Major - which included a spell in the Premier League. The tall striker was a two-time champion, cup winner and top scorer across his long list of clubs.
Familiar faces in the current Bayern squad for our fans are Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano. Salzburg-born Laimer has made the right-back position his own recently and showed his goal threat too against his former club RB Leipzig just before Christmas. The Frenchman has been a defensive rock for the German league leaders.
Some other big names to have played for both clubs have since moved on: Marcel Sabitzer and Karim Adeyemi – a former Bayern youngster – are both now at Dortmund, while Sadio Mane has since left for Saudi Arabia.
Adding to the many links are Rene Maric – a former assistant to Marco Rose in Salzburg and now part of Vincent Kompany's staff – along with sporting director Christoph Freund.
