Heimspiel Magazine Klopp Interview

"I don't know if we could print that"

A copy of our Heimspiel Magazine has not yet found its way in the hands of the legendary German manager. He will have the chance to pick one up along with all our fans though this Wednesday 27 July at 20:00 CET at the Red Bull Arena!

A special highlight is the exclusive interview with Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp, in which he talks generously about our past clashes, Salzburg in Europe and football in general. There is an excerpt below to help whet your appetite ahead of the match. The magazine also contains a comprehensive preview of the 2022/23 Austrian Bundesliga season, all the info on the Liverpool clash and much more.

Jürgen Klopp interview

It is close to three years since our UEFA Champions League meeting at Anfield. What are your memories of the match? What went through your mind after we pulled it back to 3-3?

What went through my mind when you pulled it back to 3-3? I don't know if we could print that. It is a few years back, but I remember it well.

It was an incredible game. Fast, passionate, intensive, and marked by incredible skill. It was everything you could want from a match - even if you were a neutral. I wasn't neutral though, of course.

Jürgen Klopp

What will you tell your players before they face FC Red Bull Salzburg?

To be honest, I don't think I have to say much to the players. We have played a few times against FC Red Bull Salzburg in recent years, we know you guys and have plenty of respect. I have followed the progress and development of Salzburg very closely, mostly due to the work from Ralf Rangnick in the past, and I therefore understand the ambitions and the culture of the club along with the wider project.

A lot of clever decisions have been taken, which is why you have such great success.

Jürgen Klopp

In Mane, Minamino and Keita, you've had a few former Red Bulls in your team. Are there currently any Salzburg players you are particularly impressed by?

The three names you've mentioned show just how good Salzburg is at developing football players. Who has impressed me the most? Is it okay if I don't answer? The reason is that I respect all the players. They are Austrian champions and rivals in the UEFA Champions League. I am glad to be impressed by them all.

Jürgen Klopp

Is football the most important thing in your life?

I always say – as Arrigo Sacchi kind of did – that football is the most important of the unimportant things in life. It's the best way to give it all meaning. I am not so crazy to think that football is more important than family or friends or many of the things that move people around the world on a daily basis.

As a sport, football is something quite special though, as it means so much to so many people. I therefore am happy to let the people in Liverpool treat football with the importance that they do.
