Tuesday 25 June | Rangnick's side send Austria wild
Credit where it is due! Austria took a thrilling 3-2 win against the Netherlands in their final group stage match to qualify for the last 16 as group winners - for the first time in European championship history. Our national team are quite rightly being heralded for their stunning performance in the Group of Death. The team placed second in Group F now awaits in the last 16 - with Turkey, Czechia and Georgia the possibilities. The clash will take place on Tuesday at 21:00 CEST in Leipzig. Flavius Daniliuc did not appear for the third match, but supported Austria from the bench.
Things went less fortunately for Strahinja Pavlovic and Petar Ratkov, who are exiting the tournament. After a goalless draw against Denmark, Serbia finish bottom of their group behind England, Denmark and Slovenia. Strahinja played the full 90 minutes of all three matches, while Petar did not see any playing time. The results on Tuesday also confirmed that Luka Sucic and Croatia are heading home - as they no longer have a chance of being one of the top four third-placed sides.
Monday 24 June | Joy & despair for Luka Sucic
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic started Luka Sucic for the first time at the Euros - and our talent repaid his faith with a classy performance. For 70 minutes, the left-footer played sharply, having one great effort from distance and gaining a stunning pass completion rate of 94%. There was great disappointment after the final whistle however, with Croatia leading 1-0 and destined for a spot in the last 16 until the eighth minute of stoppage time - when an Italian equaliser fell. Croatia are now left desperately hoping they might sneak into the knockouts as one of the best third-placed sides, and if that doesn't happen, Euro 2024 is over for Luka Sucic.
Friday 21 June | Austria win 3-1 v Poland
Our Red Bull Flavius Daniliuc did not appear in the second EURO 2024 group stage match, either, but he certainly had plenty to celebrate at full-time! The scores were level 1-1 at the break (Gernot Trauner scoring for Austria) before Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic netted to seal a 3-1 win for Ralf Rangnick's side. Austria therefore go into their final group stage clash against the Netherlands (Tuesday 25 June at 18:00 CEST on ServusTV) with a good chance for Onur Cincel & Co. of making the UEFA EURO 2024 last 16.
Thursday 20 June | Draw in Pavlovic vs. Sesko
A win looked to be on the cards for Slovenia (with former Salzburg star Benji Sesko) against Serbia, only for Luka Jovic to salvage a massive point right at the end. Pavlovic put in a solid performance for Serbia, playing for the full 90 minutes. Our youngster Petar Ratkov stayed on the bench amid fierce competition for attacking berths. The draw leaves Serbia still in it, but they have to win now against Denmark in the final group stage match.
Wednesday 19 June | Luka Sucic forces second goal against Albania
Croatia were struggling and 0-1 down to Albania at the break - when the Croatian coach summoned Luka Sucic from the bench for the second successive game. The Croatian side were much improved in the second half, and their patience paid. In the 74th minute, Andrej Kramaric equalised and the chances began to come thick and fast for Dalic's side. The ball was in the net again two minutes later, with our 21-year-old midfield marvel having a big part to play.
Luka Sucic's shot was blocked by a defender and took a couple of pinball bounces into the net to put his side 2-1 up. Croatia celebrated but were pegged back in stoppage time as Albania equalised - leaving them having to win on Monday 24 June against Italy.
"We are all very disappointed that we conceded the equaliser so late. We are remaining positive though and have things in our own hands against Italy. We were the much better team in the second half and showed what we are capable of," said Luka Sucic after the match.
Monday 17 June | Brave Austria defeated without Daniliuc
Austria lost their opening game against World Cup finalists France 0-1 after an own goal in the first half. While they were left with the feeling that they could have claimed something, the side coached by Ralf Rangnick together with Onur Cinel can be optimistic of their chances for the rest of the tournament. Our Red Bull, Flavius Daniliuc, did not appear. His next chance is on Friday, 21 June, against Poland.
The next Salzburg boy in action could be Luka Sucic on Wednesday 19 June, when Croatia face Albania.
Sunday 16 June | Serbian pair empty handed against England
Our Serbian Euro 2024 stars Strahinja Pavlovic and Petar Ratkov were part of a hard-fought match against England that ended in a narrow 0-1 defeat. Chances were few and far between in Gelsenkirchen as Serbia performed well, only for Jude Bellingham's 13th-minute winner to decide it.
Strahinja Pavlovic, who played as a left centre-back in a back five, played through the full 90 minutes in his usual dependable style, with Petar Ratkov watching from the substitutes' bench.
All eyes are now on Austria's opening match tonight as Ralf Rangnick and Flavius Daniliuc face France (live on ServusTV in Austria from 21:00 CEST).
Saturday 15 June | Euro debut for Luka Sucic
Croatia did not make the start they wanted to at Euro 2024. They had to face seriously strong opponents to start the tournament in Spain, who raced in front with three goals in the opening half. In the 65th minute, things became exciting from a Salzburg point of view as Mateo Kovacic was replaced by Luka Sucic. The 21-year-old, who has been with us since 2016, made his first appearance at a major international tournament in the process. He would put in a solid showing in the centre of the pitch for Croatia, albeit no more goals came - with a strike for Croatia chalked off for offside and the joy of making his debut tempered with the 0-3 defeat. We can still be very proud of our former Red Bull Academy graduate though!
